Major: Business - Management and Administration (This Major's Salary over time)
My negative opinion is solely reflective of the Business Administration major and its associated departments. Other departments at SDSU might be tolerable. Academically speaking, the majority of professors in the business department, or the school itself, should be adjudicated (tried in court) for their repeated flagrant displays of educational malpractice. Why else are hundreds of students each semester dependent on A+ review tutoring services on El Cajon Blvd. to get by with C grades? Subject specialists there have exposed numerous times the incongruity between lectures, exams, and textbook. Any transfer student from a decent school can also identify this and will tell you about the vast contrast in the classroom learning process. A few of my personal negative experiences in the business department include the following:
  • I have had several teachers who could not speak English very well, making the whole class struggle to listen. It was a very obnoxious and an uncomfortable 18-week semester.
  • I had an accounting professor who made no attempt at all to explain problems when asked, and purposely tricked students.
  • I have had numerous professors who simply can't teach.
  • I had a calculus professor who taught class the whole semester using an overhead projector with thick markers with indecipherable penmanship.
  • I had an IDS professor who discarded the syllabus, and feebly explained the new assignments, leaving the entire class continuously confused. The whole class was later marked off for not doing an assignment that it was never told to do.
  • These scenarios go on and on, believe me, like the bureaucracy you probably already know about.
  • Overall the majority of teachers suck and have no interest in seeing their students succeed. This might have something to do with their low paying state government salaries. Whatever the reason is, you are defenseless and inevitably the one loosing out.

In sum, the reality is that for the large majority of students enrolled in the business program, the lectures will be worthless in terms of the educational process, and graduating will consist of knowing how to work the system. I have learned a hundred times more about business and its academic components by reading selective books I've purchased at Barnes & Noble. That's the truth folks! Don't be victim, do whatever you can to attend a UC or some other distinguished school if you are serious about learning business and not simply obtaining the diploma. Best regards, from an experienced 6-year undergraduate student.

PS. the campus party scene is pretty lacking and borders on lame. This is mostly due to SDSU being a commuter school. Most don't know this fact until they start here. Students who are not fortunate to have transferred from and ideal school, in my professional opinion, are seriously being short-changed in terms of a decent college social life. Going Greek will practically be their only refuge option to salvage a moderate college social life experience at SDSU.
