I'm going to try and stay as unbiased as I possibly can, but I am going to open by saying this: CMU is severely affecting me as a person and my ability to be the best person I can be.

To be honest, I didn't try very hard in high school, which landed me here. If I could go back and re-walk that path, I would in a heartbeat. This place is seriously devoid of intelligence, and everyone I have come into contact here is content being merely average lemmings of society. You know the people who make their livings as bank tellers and working at insurance companies, clocking into the 9-5 every day without fail? Those are the people who attended CMU. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, nobody cares here.

Here is something I want to stress: IF YOU ARE NOT INTO DRINKING OR SMOKING A TON OF WEED, DO NOT COME HERE. The social life completely revolves getting absolutely shit-faced on the weekends, so if you don't drink, you're pretty much outta luck. If you go for a walk late at night on campus, you will undoubtedly see at least twenty drunk kids or someone getting an MIP within about five minutes. If you like to get super drunk every weekend, this is the place for you.

The academics are not challenging and an afterthought here. I had a professor last year that legitimately taught us nothing all year, only showing up about fifty percent of the time. I was absolutely stunned that I was throwing money out the window, taking this class that I almost failed because of the complete lack of instruction. Most teachers have thick accents, are ESL, or are grad students. There are a few GREAT profs here, just don't expect to have them often.

I'm going to try and be a tad positive here, as to not just throw the place under the bus entirely. The food is actually pretty decent at most of the cafeterias, and the markets are convenient when it's late. The SAC, while usually flowing free with the douche nozzles that go here is a great facility to work out, swim, shoot hoops etc. The dorms, while very small (avoid the Towers at all costs if you are a freshman) can be very homey, and the new Towers are pretty amazing and are more like student apartments.

However, the very worst part about CMU is the town: Mount Pleasant is an absolute wasteland. It's not a town: it's a freeway exit disguised as a college town. If you like fast food, Walmart, and Meijer, you're gonna dig it. If you like any sort of variety in your shopping or eating, you will not like the city. Another reason this place sucks is we are completely off the beaten track. That means a good hour and a half to any sort of civilization. It's an island of suck.

If you're completely content getting mediocre grades and drinking until you puke every night, CMU is the place for you. However, if you want anything out of life, I strongly recommend you stay away.
