Date: Jul 31 2013
Major: Economics (This Major's Salary over time)
DO NOT GO TO DELAWARE.

Econ major, very strong extracurriculars, good GPA, tons of financial analyst skills. I graduated with no job despite busting my ass looking for one (30+ hours per week on job search for 8 months), and was then unemployed for a year after graduating. The fact I attended UD got me laughed at in interviews!

My degrees (2 of them) weren't worth the paper they were printed on. I threw it in the trash the day it arrived in the mail.

I went only for the large honors scholarship. Do yourself a favor and go to another college.

I graduated in 2011 but am still incredibly bitter over having attended UD.

PROSPECTIVE FRESHMEN: DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO SOMEONE ELSE.

responseAs a person who recruits I can comment on a few things here. U Delaware does not have a bad reputation among recruiters at corporations at all. I find it hard to believe you were laughed out of an interview because of that. if you graduated in 2011, can tell you that the market in general for people in finance/investment banking/financial analyst was brutal. Hiring in general for those positions were and still are extremely weak. I don't think you can blame the school for that at all. Is it a top business school? Well it isn't Harvard bit it does have a decent reputation for students with a great track record. Your problem is not the school, it is the market you are looking for a job in. Unless you had the opportunity to go to an IVY where you do often get recruited quickly in finance, Delaware is is no worse than any other state school of that caliber.

The second thing to consider is that if you were focusing on finance/eco as a major, if you chose Delaware simply because of the scholarship ( understandable) and did not consider that Eco is not a top major at that school, well than that is not the schools fault it is your s for choosing Delaware.

Second of all, and this may seem harsh but from the way you wrote the response, those of us who recruit students and new employees can tell by the tone of things like this. There is zero possibility that you would be laughed out of an interview by mentioning Delaware. No one would ever do that. ( unless maybe you are applying to Goldman Sachs who only hires Ivy pretty much) Otherwise you are embellishing your experience. You are looking for a job in a tough market..especially in 2011 where the effects of the financial collapse were being felt. Companies are only now starting to slowly hire, but on Wall Street and in finance it is still very slow.

It sucks and I don't doubt you may be having a tough time finding a job, but I do not think its the schools fault.
