The crowd at Quinnipiac is what you would expect from suburban CT. The student population is overwhelmingly rich white kids from CT, Mass, New York and New Jersey. The school is trying to diversify but unfortunately it is pretty clear that they severely lower their academic standards for minorities to do so, and this is a school that isn't hard to get in to to begin with. The social scene and nightlife at Quinnipiac is OK. There isn't much going on in Hamden - it's a small town that is spread out and unwalkable. There's a few decent bars that people will go to but you have to get a cab or drive as the shuttles won't take you there for some reason. Besides some shopping plazas in Hamden, the shuttles take students in to New Haven which is where most students go to party on the weekends. The club scene in New Haven is alright, but it has gone downhill pretty rapidly in the past few years as the city has gotten progressively more dangerous and various clubs have been shut down. Today, the club scene is a shell of what it was when I enrolled as a freshman. There are some good instructors at QU and there are some really bad ones. They have an annoying habit, particularly in the business department, of hiring people whose lack of proficiency in English severely hinders their ability to teach a class. My main problem with QU has always been that it feels very much like a business that doesn't care about their students at all. Apart from the pristine lawn and the aesthetics of QU, which they work very hard to maintain to attract new students, nothing that Quinnipiac does is extraordinary. Any so-called "amenities" or "conveniences" that they provide for their students pale in comparison to those offered by other universities. Example: their fitness center has not gotten new equipment in over a decade. The stuff is falling apart and instead of replacing it, they force their student employees to re-paint the equipment every now and then to make it LOOK new. A friend of mine used to be a student tour guide, and one time when he was giving a tour a parent remarked about the fitness center equipment looking old and asked when it had been replaced. He responded honestly that it had been over 10 years. After the tour, he was "reminded" by his superiors that he was supposed to "deflect" questions like that and told that he would be reprimanded if he ever did that again. If the university is so ashamed of it, maybe they should fix it? But of course, my junior year when they hired a new person as director of the fitness center, his first course of action was not to replace the equipment, but to make a rule banning sleeveless shirts in a college gym. Last time I checked, only 1 dorm on the entire campus had air conditioning in the room. Among those that DON'T have air conditioning are the BRAND NEW DORMS on York Hill that the university brags so much about. Heat and A/C takes forever to come on as the university has them set to save money. I vividly remember sitting in my dorm room sophomore year wearing a hoodie on top of a long shirt and sweat pants, freezing, waiting for the heater in our room to come on. The maintenance guys would just say "oh yeah, it won't come on until it's like 58 degrees in here. The school has it set like that." The career fairs and career services are pretty laughable compared to other universities. Chartwells, the service that Quinnipiac has chosen to feed its students - aka the lowest bidder - is absolutely horrible and incredibly overpriced. It comes as no surprise that Chartwells' other main business is making airplane food for Southwest. The dining hall closes ridiculously early - like 7pm, and after that the only thing is open is the "Bobcat Den" which is basically an extremely scaled down version of the dining hall with even worse food that cannot hold that many people. Good luck getting something to eat at the Bobcat Den at 8. Parking is another nightmare, just another example of how the university doesn't care because they have known it is a problem for years. Several days all of the lots have gotten so full that the university has had to dispatch security to direct people to park their cars in rows on the lawn next to the law school. But of course, how could a university, that KNOWS how many spaces they have and KNOWS how many students are enrolled in classes at different times of the day, EVER be expected to foresee such a problem? Even after it has happened, they've done nothing to remedy it. Like I said, it is a business, and they won't spend money on their current students. Only things that will attract prospective students. Once they have your money, they don't care about you anymore. I hate to be so cynical, but since pretty much the moment I arrived at Quinnipiac I felt like the university was just a business that was only concerned about their U.S News & World Report ranking and increasing their enrollment, not in providing a good experience for the students that were already enrolled.
Responses
University life is certainly not easy. In addition to the heavy workload, research paper writing service will also have to live with roommates, who you may find useless. You may feel lonely and have to spend time with the professors, who you may find not at all helpful.
