Oh, I don't doubt for a minute their propaganda is convincing. They know how to sell you on something without ever actually telling you much about it. Or, at least, much that's worth knowing. I can't believe you spent 9 years there and came out this sane, and able to be objective about the school. I agree with you completely. They do indeed very much deserve the label of "cultic", as the cloistered, close-minded, secretive mindset of BJU is much more like a cult than a normal university. I further agree that contrary to their emphatic and repeated assertions that all they do and teach is based on Scripture, they are in fact merely reading off Bible passages that sound good while the heart and soul of it all is, as you said, ultra-conservative legalism. "Legalism" and "legalistic" as well as "cult" and "racist" are just the most prominent of the many unflattering things I've heard to describe BJU. I looked at their handbook for 2016-2017. It's unbelievable some of the stuff they say they believe in and have a right to do, or make you do if you go there. They pretty much get to run your life. You can't even pick what music to listen to anymore once you go there. And I have noticed how while many alumni and staff seem to stay on the BoJo train for the rest of their lives and praise BJU to the skies, some of the most vocal and fired-up critics of BJU are, and appear to be, ex-students and ex-faculty. That should indeed tell us something! And for me it certainly does. I heard they finally did get regional accreditation in 2016, but that cuts very little ice with me since BJU looks to have changed next to nothing about how it operates. "Do your research and stay away". Best warning advice I ever read. Great review. |

Major: Religion/Religious (This Major's Salary over time)
If you believe their convincing propaganda you will think that Bob Jones University is a wonderful Christian college. Unfortunately this is not the case. I went there nine years, I was a society officer and graduate assistant, I have carefully and objectively studied their rationale and educational philosophy and I can tell you that they justly deserve their label of "cultic". Once experience opens your eyes to this you see it everywhere - it permeates all aspects of student life. They claim to derive their authority from Scripture, defending and proclaiming the Bible's truth, but their entire pseudo-Christian culture is actually based on ultra-conservative, legalism (the long-standing ban against inter-racial dating and the current handbook are just a few examples). Do research before investing your time and money into this place, it has the reputation it does for a reason. Its most knowledgeable and vocal critics have all been students in the past….that should tell you something. And assuming you graduate after all that work, your degree will not be worth anything (I should know, I have three of them from BJU) because they are not regionally accredited, nor are they actually in the process of becoming accredited (contrary to what they might say). Please, please, please do not be taken in by the propaganda of their admissions department. Do your research and stay away.
