Major: Undecided (This Major's Salary over time)
I came to Central rather spur-of-the-moment because I didn't get into MSU or U of M (so yes, the rumor is true- we're rejects). My mother graduated from here and said that it was a pretty decent school and that she enjoyed her time there…25 years ago. A lot has changed since then. CMU used to be a decent place to get an education, while having a little bit of fun. Not anymore. Now academics are secondary to partying. Mount Pleasant is a horribly boring town, so basically, all you can do is drink- but I wouldn't. Cops are everywhere. Last year, they handed out 400 MIPs all year. This year, they handed out 250…just during welcome weekend. Now, I'm a relatively laid-back, outgoing sort of person, but everyone I've met so far seem to be your typical "cool kids" from high school: closeminded, not so bright partiers. Imagine those kids from your high school roaming free in a place with no authority figures. That's CMU for you. Nobody likes to just hang out here. Everyone needs constant stimulation, like a bunch of two year olds would. Not going to lie, the school (sort of) makes an effort to entertain those who don't want to party all of the time. But the attempts are pretty pathetic, and it almost seems like they're babying you. I will give credit to both the campus itself, as well as its security. Campus is small and pretty decent looking, so it doesn't feel like you're walking for hours in a ghetto. I never feel unsafe, even if I'm walking around at 11:30 at night. Classes aren't hard, but a lot of them are taught by grad students. It doesn't exactly thrill me, but a few of them aren't bad. So, to sum this all up: Central is the place to go if you're in-state, and want to pay (or have your parents pay) $20,000 for you to party each year, and maybe get a degree in six years time. I'm sure it was a great place in the eighties, but now it just sucks. Please don't come here if you don't fit the above criteria. AND DON'T BELIEVE THE REPRESENTATIVES WHO COME TO HIGH SCHOOLS. They're number one priority is to SELL the school to you, not to look out for your best interests. Tour the school, look at sites like this, and talk to people who go there. I only wish I considered this advice before deciding on a school. I cannot wait 'til this semester ends, so I can finally leave.
