I am a Junior at Umass and I am a writing this review as a caveat to prospective students. For the most part professors are intelligent, capable and care about their jobs however the resources supporting the campus and you as a student are extremely lacking.Take the library for example it is where outside of classes and socializing where most of your time studying is spent. Studying is impossible because the library is LOUD, the computers and studying areas are RIGHT next to a lobby, so the idea libraries are quiet doesn't apply at umass. Also expect to wait in line to use a computer, once your logged expect to wait another 5 minutes just so OIT can verify your login and expect to wait in line when using the printer. And oh yeah theres a line for the bathroom too.. So if you decide to go here, don't use our library, use one of the five college libraries. In classroom resources are similarly bad; many of the classrooms are antiqued with overhead projectors and chalkboards. Forget the idea of a hi-tech college, it's not here at umass. The campus is literally crumbling and it's not pretty, no colors or bricks or ivy as you might imagine. It's drab and cement. For example the hotel:
Please be aware if your going to umass then it is an extremely liberal college; objectivity does not apply. Most professors are far-left, they love Karl Marx, they love the color red and they love Obama. So trust me most of what is taught is biased towards the left; as as student I want to learn not be told how to think.Socially the campus is great; there are thousands of students of all variety and background, lots of beautiful women and great partying. But don't get caught, because the school will write a note to mom & dad telling them how "bad" you've been. I'm not kidding, every semester the school writes hundreds of letters, so the idea of being "independent" and "free" isn't a guaranteed right at umass.
In my opinion most of these problems would not matter so much if Umass was not the most expensive public school in the country! It cost over 12,000 dollars to go here as a student and as an out-of-state student you're paying for less, our endowment is also the lowest of any flagship college in the country and please be aware of this.
Every year the reputation of Umass drops, 10 years ago we were among the top 75 universities in the country, today were not even in the top 100.
