Okay, so let's get down to the basics. First and foremost, this is a pretty big school so there's no way that you can typically define the people who attend college here. Chances are, you will end up finding people that you can relate to here if you are willing to be friendly and a little social. Yes, our campus is huge compared to certain other schools but please do not be intimidated. There are always maps available and the students are always willing to help you to find your way. I started knowing where all of the important buildings were by the 2nd to 3rd week. However, you must be prepared to do some walking because this campus is wide and many of the residential areas can only be reached by walking up a a slight or major hill (such as Orchard Hill, certain dorms at Central, and Sylvan to an extent). Amherst is a warm college town with cute shops and resturants. Are there parties? Yes. On the contrary, be aware that the majority of these parties will and have usually taken place at Southwest or some sort of Frat/Sorority house. As a warning, you should be careful if you decide to enter this scence, especially when a party takes place at a Frat house. There are certain shady things that often go on and you should always be smart and cautious. I had a friend that lived in Southwest and I remember visiting on a Saturday night. The place was like some sort of Urban, partying jungle. The girls had on short dresses and heels. The boys were all smokeing and listening to loud music. In my personal opinion, this place brought me back to some of my darkest moments in New York City. There was a sleazy aura in the air and let's just say that I am glad that I have never dormed there. Hey, maybe certain people prefer this kind of lifestyle and that's their preference. Also, don't let anyone tell you that Sylvan is for anti-social people because that's the biggest lie I've ever herd. Sylvan actually has some of the coolest people that are independent and not into following the band wagon. The rooms are well furnished and the bathrooms are always kept clean. It's seriously not far from the campus at all ( next door to North apartments). I live here because I choose to and I like it! The teachers here are very helpful and genuine. You should have no problems. This place is beautiful during all seasons besides Winter. During the Winter, this place looks like a cold, mean, and strange dungeon but we've learned to deal with it. There are many places to eat and the food is delicious. It's not hard to save your money here. Lastly, be open to having different friends and don't seclude yourself to one group. Your experience can have A LOT to do with the kind of company that you keep. Also, this place isn't as "crazy" as some ignorant people pump it up to be. We actually have more down to earth people than plenty of other schools. There's always a few loud mouths that ruin it for everyone else but rest assured, the majority of the students ARE NOT like that. Try not to follow any crowd and be your own person and you'll find your place. Best of Luck with your college experience!
