I notice many students criticizing UT for being too big and too impersonal. But here's another way too look at it: the real world is a big and impersonal place where most general people don't care about you until you can prove yourself to them. Consider UT training for the real world.

I was quiet and shy through most of high school. Aside from what I learned in the classroom I also learned how to be assertive, organized and the importance of networking and learning from peers as well as instructors.

Getting plugged in here as a transfer student was probably harder that starting as a freshman but I managed. Obviously UT is not for everyone but you also have to ask yourself is it worth paying 2 or 3 times as much for an undergrad education becuase that's about what it costs to go to a private university. Good luck, I hope this advice helps someone out there. Hook Em Horns.

responseTrue but in the real world you work and get paid, in college you pay for an education, and if you are making an investment you deserve the treatment your money buys you. UT charges top dollar for their education and they should provide that education and not just their name on your diploma
commentIts been a while since I was at UT but last time I checked 4 years at UT cost around \(8,000 more than going to Texas State U for 4 years. TX State Univ is just south on I-35 from UT.SRF:ELEMENTS:0xsrfTexas A&M is probably most similar to UT in terms of enrollment and academics. The expense of tuition and fees at A&M costs about the same or more \) than UT. Much of my family went to A&M.

Bottom line is that college is expensive even at state colleges but I do not believe UT is significantly more expensive than other TX state universities. Cost of living in Austin will be a bit higher than other cities but theres a lot of opportunities that come with living there. It has been my experience that a degree from UT is very well respected. Overall I would say the most important consideration is to go somewhere you can afford, study what interests you and be proud of where you are.

commentThe buildings at UT Austin are hideous. How can anyone refer to the campus as beautiful? Unless you love old fashioned communist buildings from the Soviet Union era. If you love football, binge drinking, and terrible lectures then try UT Austin. If you enjoy debating with socially retarded arrogant brats in and out of class then try UT Austin. Most of the students are clueless. They walk around like zoned out zombies. It's the weirdest and least friendly city in Texas. However, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are the best cities in Texas and people should avoid Austin if they don't want to be a targeted individual.
responseUT is awesome and the people that go here are some of the best students you'll find. If someone is a complainer they're going to complain PERIOD.
