UCSC is especially welcoming when it comes down to the individual people you meet and surrounded by. The professors aren't all exactly laid back but at least try to sound friendly. The classes will be challenging that is a given, but there is a very supportive community of peers that are usually present, you just have to make a slight effort to meet new people and it is almost guaranteed that will be friendly towards you. The overall environment I would have to say is very "chill" not very cut throat. I would give the school a 9/10 only because there is not much of a city life, but there's always the beach!!
