I've only been at RPI for a semester, but I can tell you what I already know.PROS: great engineering school (kids are handed jobs after graduation), you could graduate with a 2.5 and still get a decent job, the campus itself is pretty, a few really cool down-to-earth kids, hockey games, some really friendly faculty, people at dining hall are friendly and nice, sage dining hall food isn't too horrible, barton dorms are nice/new.CONS: the surrounding area is sketchy (do NOT walk alone at night, especially off campus), most kids are either snotty/rich or total nerds (leaving few friends…), most faculty doesn't care about intro/freshman classes, no matter what they say YOU WILL BE IN CLASSES OF 300+ for the first year, hard work in most classes for little feeling of accomplishment, commons dining hall food is crappy, mostly crappy dorm rooms (over priced), everyone here will make you feel retarded.OVERALL: I don't absolutely hate it here, but decided to switch to hospitality management (my dreams of ever becoming a doctor have been crushed) so I'll probably transfer at the end of the semester. I made a handful of great friends, but spent the majority of my time doing homework/eating/mostly everything alone. If you're smart and not particular sociable, RPI is great. I, however, felt the social scene was severely lacking. Also, don't buy the $2000 laptop that they make seem so important. I wasted money on it. Unless you're in engineering, then I suppose you might use the programs. But you can usually download all the things you'll need for free, or like $10-20. Check out the campus first, some kids love it here, some kids hate it. It really depends on who you are.
