What to say about NU…I wouldn't say that my time here over the past year has been fantastic but neither would I say that it's been the worst experience in my life. Make what you will of that. What I've found is that it is extremely difficult to make friends here who want to have a cultured, classy life in their limited free time. This is a college for people who've never experienced the limitless joys of the Bay Area or walked around NYC. This is a college for people who've never left the Midwest and seen the real cities in America. People here think they are cultured and think they are indie and hip and well, that's just it, they only think they are from what they've read online. They've never experienced the actual scene. Most people spend their time behind a book and not enough time opening up. This is why I eschew the cultural groups, they just do not help one make real friends. All you do is go to X club, eat some food, and bullshit with people. Oh and the student leadership is only there to use the club as a means by which to pad their grad school applications. That's another feeling you get while walking around, you get the feeling that everyone is here not to learn but just to get into grade A grad school. Whatever happened to wanting to learn and understand the material?

As for the dorms, they're ok. Dorms are crummy no matter where you go. What the campus does need is wireless access that actually works and is conveniently accessible. I mean, come on, most schools of less caliber and PRICE have this basic connectivity.

The professors are not the best in the world, but that depends on the department. I've had great encounters in the Math Department but with the Chem Dept, I've had some mixed feelings. Chem 101-103 is more about weeding out pre-meds than actually teaching Chemistry. The professors are too self-absorbed and lectures are a blatant waste of time. I spent most of my Freshman year teaching myself everything and still didn't do well. I did that and went to lecture religiously and copied down the notes and went to office horus and still did poorly. I don't get it either. The French Dept is great as is the Dept of Music, I hear.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend going here, but if you do, you might enjoy it. I haven't found my niche yet, so it's more of a personal issue than anything else. Don't expect a big cultured campus with lots to do though, just come in expecting studying 24/7 individuals with no personality and social skills.
