This is in direct response to the Negative Poster who stated that "BC is Sports-Obsessed". This person also objected to the idea that Students are unwilling to challenge Church Teachings. Lastly, this person believe BC is "overrated". First, if Boston College is as "Sports-obsessed" as you suggest, there would be a lower academic standard for Athletes in the Recruitment process. BC has the highest Graduation Rate for Student Athletes of all Division 1 Schools outside of the Military Schools. The "compromise" you accused the Administration of is simply a false assumption based merely on prejudice and dislike of Student Athletes and its intangible byproduct "School Spirit". I'll talk School Spirit any day of the week over School Apathy. Secondly, Students and Faculty members reguarly participate in very provocative discourses on Church Teachings from all angles. Either you weren't paying attention in and out of Class or you were severely limiting your own exposure. The perception and opinion of BC as an Academic juggernaut is shared and expressed by various journals, peers and ranking institutes based on various metrics. It has one of the toughest acceptance rates in the country (currently at 29%) and is one of the most applied to Private Schools in the World. In other words, there are many distinguished people in the world who disagree with your assertion. You painted an inaccurate and false caricature of BC and you knowingly did so. You observed a few archetypes on Campus and simply made that an object of your criticism without batting an eye to the absence of logic in your premise. The one aspect of your review we can agree on is that BC's Campus is absoutely stunning. With the new 10 year plan, the Jesuits are expanding the Campus with the original "Oxford in America" design in mind. It will only get better.BC is rooted deeply in a cherished intellectual tradition that is proven, relevant and intriguing. Athletics is just one small aspect of the BC experience, not the core.
