Stony Brook is a huge university with lots of opportunity for success, but no one is going to hold your hand and do the work for you. There are lots of amazing teachers and some less-than-great instructors, if you pay attention and ask your peers for advice you will be able to build a great degree. Socially, Stony Brook is like any other school, there is no automatic entertainment, but New York is a train ride away, and so many students have cars that its not hard to find people to road-trip to the beach.
