FACTS about crime related issues for various colleges can be found on the internet at the following link:

You can select the colleges you are interested in and then select crime statistics. I compared statistics for a variety of schools versus the Univ. of Delaware from this web site.

For example - Regarding Burglaries on campus, here are how some other schools compared to the U of D:

Harvard Univ: approx. 10 times as many burlaries as U of D

U of Md: Approx. 3-4 times as many burglaries as UD

Boston College: approx. 1.5 times as many burglaries

Univ. of Penn: Approx the same as UD

Rutgers Univ. (New Brunswick) Approx. 4-5 times as many burglaries as UD

I am a former alum of the U of D and my son attends there now. He has not expressed any concerns about security. One does not generally see creepy characters walking around campus or town. That does not mean they do not exist however. U of D makes any criminal activity on or about campus very obvious to students by putting such information on their UDaily web site for all students to see and be aware of. It is a full disclosure policy. Most other colleges make such info much harder to find. That does not mean they do not at times have issues as the

comparative statistics above reveal, however, they should be put in perspective. That is, U D statistics suggest a safer environment than many other schools that are also highly regarded and sought out by students.

If you want a zero crime environment you need to go to school in the middle of a cornfield. Newark is a small city, not a cornfield. If you demand a zero crime environment you should not ever seek employment in a city either. Be a farmer.

Before sending my son to UD I queried numerous students regarding how safe they felt on campus. No one expressed any significant concerns. Criminal acts are not zero, but they are not out of control either as a previous post might lead one to believe.
