Despite being here enrolled in a double MA program, I think my comments apply to the undergrad experience as well. This is a great environment. Out of state tuition is excessive, but the university still maintains a high percentage of out of state & international students based largely on its appeal to all types of students. Funding is lacking, especially for graduate students, so be prepared for student loans (unless mom or dad are paying for your education). The cost of living is low, and although Bloomington is a small city, big cities are accessible (Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville). Academics here vary—from some of the best programs in the country to some of the worst. The bottom line is that you need to do some research on your individual department or program. Also, be advised that the day to day experience can seem rather bureaucratic and/or inefficient: computing & online services are mostly good, but the university still is behind in some areas (i.e. no online transcript resquests, etc).
