I am an international student and going to SUNY Binghamton was the biggest mistake I have ever made in my entire life. I did not know that I was about to hate everything in binghamton: people, food, academics, weather, city, administration, faculty, etc… That is why:

The majority of students are not friendly at all, unsociable, arrogant, cold, closeminded, snob, etc… If you are an international student and wish to make new friends in BU, don't even try, you're gonna get no succes doing that, nobody is going to accept you in their group or even bother make a new friend… people have already filled out their circle of friends or are members of a fraternity, the only thing is that you will " know " people that live in your dorm, or with who you had the opportunity to work with in study groups, saying "hi" "hello" "how are you", that's it. If you meet some compatriots that's a chance. If you do not, transfer at all costs.

If you really want to enjoy binghamton life, you gotta be a drinker and party all week-ends in downtown houses. you gotta also try to pledge to a stupid frat and then PAYING for having friends and fun. Personally, the frat concept is the stupidest thing I have ever known in my life, the thing is that you are paying each semester 100 $ or more for having a social life and for drinking free beer each friday night. You can have fun with them playing a popular moronic game : beer pong… that's it end of story, don't listen to those frat boys seeking for pledgers that they are "a family" and "brothers", that they will "help you academically"… LIES, they want MONEY from you and they want to have drink beer and have fun, if you want to fail from school then pledge…

If you're going to live on campus, I highly recommand you to live in the apartments to make your OWN food because if you go the regular dorms you will have to have a meal plan and the dining halls offer the CRAPPIEST food in the US. The jail food id probably tastier than the shit that is served to you 3 times a day.

Academically, if you are an international student and want to study as an undergraduate I will definitely advice to not do that, most international students come as graduate students and transfer from schools abroad. The courses are difficult for no reasons, tests are hard, averages are low, academical adviser are no help, professors are zeros…

One thing, don't ever listen to your academic adviser ! I have experienced that and I can say the engineering academic adviser (Sharon Santobuono to cite her) has ruined my carreer at binghamton, she gave me sophomore classes while I was just a freshman, she gave the classes she wanted just to fill them up. If you need advice anyways talk to Lorna Wells she's better.

Administration are cold arrogant and does not want to help, they are just trying to get out, there are thousands of offices in all the buidings the campus have, if you have a specific problem with payment or something the student accounts office can not help you, they're just a bunch of stupid robots that do the same tasks each day.

Since binghamton is the asshole of The United States of America, the weather is horrible, 5 entire months of snowing , everything else is raining or terrible cold with a big gray cloud in the sky, just 2 or 3 days of clement weather approaching the end of the spring semester.

The city of binghamton is populated with old and disabled people. The surroundings are a bunch of houses next to each other. The only distraction for binghamton people is going to wall-mart. It's not a ciy it's a SHITY !!!

Now, I have finsihed my freshman year at BU and I am transfering faaaaar from binghamton and I know that I have made a wise decision and I'm happy.

Anyways, if you want to have the 4 worst years of your life, come to binghamton.

Good luck

responseNOTICE TO EVERYONE READING THIS REVIEW!!!! This person was obviously a socially inept and bitter individual. This person most likely made no attempt at truly making the Binghamton experience great. If you just sit around and expect Binghamton to hold your hand and lick your ass then this is the wrong school for you. Binghamton University is a place where you have countless opportunities to get involved on campus and truly make your experience great. I guess this guy just likes being a miserable ungrateful bore. Yes, Binghamton is a very academically difficult school, you need to study, you need to focus, and you need to have half a brain. And the students?? Are you kidding me?? Our school is so diverse that you can find anyone from dorks to jocks to drag queens. You just need to get off your ass and find some people you click with. We have 15,000 students, there is no way this guy was very sociable. Oh and another thing, MOST STUDENTS ARE NOT IN SORITIES OR FRATERNITIES! There is absolutely NO PRESSURE to join anything of the sort. Yes, our food isn’t five star, but we have tons of variety and really isn’t that bad. Academic Advising (For the Watson School of Engineering) is top notch, matched by none, period. Anyone (besides this asshole) in the Watson School will tell you that. Sharon Santobuono, the advisor that he was talking about, takes care of all of us in Watson. She is pretty much our mother away from home; she bends over backward and goes WAY beyond her required duties to ensure that our education here is as smooth, comfortable, and top notch. She ALWAYS makes time for her students and will keep a smile on her face no matter how much pain she is going through. She is always kind, caring, and supportive to her students no matter how obnoxious, and bitter they are. There is no adviser on this campus that can even BEGIN to match Sharon’s ability. She is an asset to every student at this school.
responseFirst of all, this student is criticizing things about the school that the school has no control over. If he had done any research on the school before deciding to attend, he would have know what the weather was like and the type of city the school is in. These things should factor into what school you decide to attend. Obviously this student did not do his homework before attending.

Second of all, there are so many students at this school that someone would have to try not to make friends. Yes, we have sororities and fraternities (most schools do!) but in no way, shape, or form do they control the social scene at our school. We have over 160 clubs/organizations and that does not even include sports teams. There are always plenty of things to do, whether you chose to drink or not. I find it very hard to believe that a person would not make any friends unless they sat in their room and made no effort. No, there is not a welcoming committee and your mother is not here to make you go out and meet people, but how do you think all those other groups were formed? Obviously those people chose to go out and try to meet people and surprise, they did!

Thirdly and most importantly, you have no idea what you are talking about in reference to the Watson Academic Advisors and faculty. Sharon Santobuono is beyond words wonderful and one of the nicest people I have ever met. She treats the students here in the Watson school as her own children. I have seen her fight tooth and nail to protect them and their best interests. She would never treat anyone as just another student who fills a spot in a class. Every case is personal and each student is seen individually. Sharon knows her stuff forwards and backwards and she would have never recommended a student take a class they did not need or could not handle. Yes, Binghamton is a rigorous school and the Watson school in particular is known for its difficult coursework. That is what makes it a good school. If you can not handle the work and you do not make the effort to seek help, that is your own fault. The faculty here is excellent, composed of experts in their respective fields. All you need to do ask and they would be more than happy to help you or show you some other resource that will.

Obviously the person who wrote this review had a chronic problem with not putting in enough effort: they did not research the school before coming here, they did not try to make friends and they did not seek help when it was needed. This is unquestionably a personal problem of the student. I hope all that read this review take it with more than a grain of salt, because it honestly in no way reflects the Binghamton experience that I and thousands of other students have had. This is an institution that teaches students to be independent. They are not going to hold your hand. Binghamton University is a great place if you only put in the effort and put yourself out there.

responseNot sure what experience this student above had but I am a Binghamton Alumni and I loved my time in Binghamton University. I met close friends who I still keep in contact. I met my wife while in Binghamton University. As far as the experience it is what you make of it. But I feel the staff in Binghamton University was great and went through great lengths to help you in anyway. Lorna Wells was outstanding as a counselor and she shows that she really cares about the school, students and curriculum.
responseBinghamton U is a great place to go to college, at any level. The bitterness in this losers review says all you need to know. Maybe he was a Bin Laden.
commentOh my god OP, you've hit the nail for me too! If you're not white or straight in this school, good luck! You hit on pretty much all the points. I can tell you're not a huge partier and neither and I. Personally I skateboard but the scene is ZERO. Hell it's illegal downtown! Honestly, the school is American culture glorified to the max. No resemblance of worldliness or acceptance.
responseDon't even listen to this person. I spent one semester here and I'm certain I would never leave. The people here are nice and helpful. As long as you put in effort and time with your studies your grades will be fine. There may be a group of students who do pary but there are plenty of students who don't. And the majority of the students take their work seriously. This person obviously had the wrong mindset going in and didn't try to make friends. There are so many good people I've met that I consider close friends. There are so many great, considerate and mature people. Anywhere you go there will be arrogant close-minded people as this person shows. There is absolutely 0 pressure to join a fraternity and I like the food. The few months I've been here have been the greatest experience.

responseI cannot agree more with the original reviewer. Besides, he has the right to express the impact of Binghamton environment on him freely. I don’t think the lengthy diatribe given by the above response is in any way ok. I totally hear the former freshman who, I can testify, honestly has spoken up about his experience. I am happy for him to have moved on. I hope we could do better in whatever we do at BU and accept that we must do much better, given the undeniable horrible impact of this dead town on young people. Again, there is no question that this town is the poster child of American ignorance, and yes, arrogance: a failed town and a conservative school.
