ASU is not the typical "green lawn, brick building" kind of university that much of the mid-west/east has. It takes some getting used to, but I absolutely love it. Being the largest university in the country, you have to be willing to get involved and seek out opporunities if you want that in your college experience. The campus is moving away from being a commuter school and becoming a place where students will want to stay for four years, and be more involved in ASU. This will probably help a lot with school spirit, which sometimes feels lacking, but I think that's generally the way the west is, just because there is SO MUCH to do outside all year round. Obviously the weather is amazing year round, and if you want the atmosphere of a large university, this place definitely has it. You probably want a car, at least after freshman year, because phoenix/tempe/scottsdale is really geared towards cars as transportation, but students do get free city bus passes, which will get you anywhere you really need to go. The best thing about being here is that there is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS something going on, especially if you're involved. Mexico is close, California is close, Colorado is close, and within the valley area there is barely a limit to the things you can explore, especially if you're from out of state and don't know much about the western U.S.
