I just transfered to NU after spending two years at Boston University. Adjusting to NU life was quite difficult in my first quarter because I had grown so accustomed to the thrill of city life. People here seem definitely much more low-key, and like to stay indoors and study. But then again, I've only been here for a quarter, so I'm sure there are also people who like to go out a lot and have fun.

As a performing musician, I really like it here. I love my private teacher, and I love my ensembles. Everyone is really enthusiastic in rehearsals, and pretty much everyone gets along really well in the music school. I'm always notified of festival/job opportunities, and am even sometimes given discounts to CSO concerts.

Music academics are not that great on an intro level, but at the grad/300 level, they're awesome.

The facilities here are ok, better than BU, but not great. The practice rooms are a little old, and boomy, and you can hear people next door…but if you practice early in the morning or late at night, that won't be a problem at all. The music classroom building is pretty old, but is a historical landmark, so we can't exactly tear it up and rennovate it. But apparently there are new plans to build a new music building near the practice rooms…it's just a matter of time…when we get the money…hehe.

But Pick-Staiger, NU's biggest performing venue, is wonderful. We hold our symphony orchestra, and band concerts here, and the acoustics are great. And this year it was newly recarpeted and reupholstered, so it looks even better than before.

In terms of surrounding environment, Evanston is not that thrilling, probably because it's just a suburb. But Chicago is wonderful, undoubtedly. There's ALWAYS something to see, whether it be Lyric, CSO, plays, art, museums, etc. And there's also TONS of great eating places.

So NU may have its ups and downs, but what college doesn't? Overall, I'd say this is the place has something for everyone, regardless of personality-type. So…yes. Yay, NU.
