Berkeley is the most overated university in the country. While competition is fierce - to the point that scholastic integrity is nonexistent - quality of the undergrad education is poor. Cheating and hypocrisy are everywhere - and a reflection of the community at large. It is - without question - the most racist school imaginable. If you are a white male Christian and in engineering or the hard sciences, you are a minority. Expect blantant discrimination at its worst. The Chinese Students Assn is the most powerful organization on campus. The TAs are usually Asian and unless you're in their "clique", problem sets and exams will be graded accordingly and often unfairly. Students have no alternatives. When author Tom Clancy researched his book Executive Orders, he observed that the Asian people were the most racist on earth. Berkeley is the best example of this. In general, the university and community are intolerant of anyone who disagrees with their political viewpoint. The "Hate America" crowd is alive and well in Berkeley. If you want to succeed in getting a good education, I suggest you try another school. You'll get a much better education - formal and otherwise.

responseI'll agree that it's overrated, but not for the reasons you name. In the first place, I haven't seen very many asian gsi's (and I'm an eecs major too). In the second place, YOUR gsi doesn't even grade YOUR test, that's one of the policies enforced here. I don't know about the CSA being the most powerful organization, good grief, face the fact that nobody's here to hold your hand or make it easier on you. There's a reason why people say its competitive here. There's a reason why the average GPA is not a 4.0. This is a public school, and you're not paying them to give you straight A's.
responseWow the author of this original comment is a moron. the chinese students association is the most powerful organization on the berkeley campus? sounds like the originator of the comment justifying poor grades for racism. in the real world, that's called denial. :)
responseOP is probably a socially unlikeable person, which accounts for the "racism" he experienced.

HAHHAHAHA!!

Asian people were the most racist on earth
that is so racist in a bad way but it makes me laugh in a good way
As for fierce competition and cheating, people help their friends, and I have yet to see anyone cheat or plan to cheat on an exam—I am also in the EECS department.
responseI say let the asians cheat (probably mostly Chinese), they're only cheating themselves, really. Is it no wonder you never really see any asians winning the Nobel Prize in physics and such. No doubt they can do rote learning (any idiot can), but they always seem to lack in the realm of original or authentic creativity. : ) haha
commentThe above response got me to thinking: It is interesting that one of the most populace countries on the planet have won only 8 combine Nobels in Physics/Chem/Medicine, while on of the smallest demographic groups (Jews) have accounted for 85.
commentHaving attended Berkeley and other UC system schools as undergrad, and completing PhD in physics at a top 10 school, I have to agree with the OP. UCB has a very hypocritical environment. In grad school, I ran into guys I knew - and succeeded - at Berkeley. But they were failing miserably in grad school for some reason. Berkeley's environment was not representative of the real world. No regrets on having done PhD elsewhere.
