I came to Illinois with that nervousness you have when you remove yourself from your comfort zone. I had no idea what to expect from NU, and after a year there, I can say that I have mixed feelings about it. While the coursework is rigorous, it sometimes seems like busywork. You see a lot of shocked faces after the first quarter or two- the look of kids who were smart kids in high school realizing that they are now dead average. If you were used to getting by on just intelligence in high school, Northwestern is a pretty rough adjustment..

Kids here are friendly for the most part, but there are defintely cliques that form quickly. Being a transfer, it was hard to find that clique. A lot of the social scene is within the Greek system, so either you love it or you hate it. The frat/sorority scene is not hard to get into (like 30 percent of guys are in one here, and 40 percent of girls).

If reenacting moments from the movie Old School in your free time is not your thing, theres always that little city called Chicago a short train ride away. There are a lot of top notch clubs if you are into that scene (check out the Bhudda Lounge and the Soundbar) in Chicago as well as a lot of jazz bars, restaurants, and anything else you can imagine.

The campus is beautiful. That's the only word to describe it. When you walk to class in the morning, you will always see someone tending to the bushes or mowing the lawn. This place is always meticulous It is one of those universities that actually looks like it does in the brochure.

A lot of people here think we are unfairly judged to be a "non-academic" school because of our Big 10 status, a bias a lot of people seem to have. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth- This school is intense! The quarter system really forces you to cram, and it seems like you are either having a midterm or a final every week of the quarter. This stresses people out, but most learn how to cope pretty well.

One thing to remember is that Chicago is COLD. I cannot stress this fact enough. When the weather is nice, you can go to the lake (practically on campus by the way) and chill. Life is good around summertime at Northwestern. However, the winter will eat you alive if you don't bring the right clothes. The winters here are seriously intense.

Academically, we are definitely better than the lower ivies (Cornell, Brown) and about on par with UPenn (not Wharton) and Columbia. You'll see a lot of people who got into Penn or Columbia and chose to go here.

Are you sure about that? A lot of people I know or have heard about got rejected by most Ivies, esp. those such as Penn and Columbia, as well as Stanford, MIT, etc. Their remaining choices weren't that great either.
