Major: Biology (This Major's Salary over time)
I'm a bio major - which Stony is known for. Most of the above comments are true- you make your experience at Stony here. The area is dead, but you can find friends and have fun also. The bio dept is terrific. All of my profs had so far been great with a few exceptions. My psyc stat prof was AWFUL. She managed to make a test on avgs and means, something you learn in FOURTH GRADE and have HALF the class fail. And when I spoke to her about it, she refused to to change anything. So there are those kinds of teachers and then there are teachers like Hemmick in the physics dept who gives us 2 8hrs of out of class time to hold review sessions before exams, going over every single problem and making sure we understand everything. That's dedication to students.I love Stonybrook and I know I'm getting more than my money's worth. If you are interested in an active social life, be prepared to work for it or go somewhere else. An exception would be those interested in Greek life, then you may find stuff to do. There are always off-campus club parties going on hosted by frats/sororities or the club themselves so there's plenty of partying.Dorms are bad, but not as bad as other schools. The buildings are crappy, and there are horrible wind tunnels that freeze you to the core in winter. But there are a lot of flowering trees and they just renovated the area between the library and arts building with a huge lawn for ppl to have picnics and lie there and trees. The university is improving it's aesthetic qualities bit by bit but to get an A, they would have to bulldoze all the buildings (besides Wang) and make new ones.
