I don't know what's wrong with a lot of people who have posted here, but UCSC is an excellent school. I've had the pleasure of being part of the Earth Sciences Dept, which has treated me so well. The classes are small, my instructors and TAs have been excellent (I've hung out with them outside of class), the campus is amazingly beautiful (learn to walk!), and I've found it top be an all-around great experience. There are great opportunities for undergraduate research experiences. I'm graduating this spring with 2 years of lab experience which have gotten me into PhD programs in the top graduate schools for geophysics in the country.

I admit, there are hippies, they are annoying, but they aren't nearly a prevalent as people on the site have made it seem. Santa Cruz does not live up to the party school reputation it has acquired, but I've still partied plenty. I've always been able to find something to do whether a party or an event downtown.

Santa Cruz, the city itself, is not a big city if that's what you are looking for, but downtown is still a lot of fun: bars, clubs, coffee shops, book stores, etc.

I've also noticed that a lot of people who posted on this site haven't actually seen much of Santa Cruz. Like the person who complained about the lack of grocery stores: there are at least 5 large, chain-type grocery stores in Santa Cruz and then several more small ones. I think a lot of people on here just haven't bothered to actually make an effort to get to know the city or the campus; they just came into the whole thing close-minded and decided they hated Santa Cruz.

UCSC IS A GREAT SCHOOL!
