All I have to say is that this place sucks ass. I HATE this school. I've completed my first semester, and I can honestly say that coming here was the worst decision I have ever made in my life. There are so many things wrong with this school, that it all wouldn't fit here, but I'll do my best to explain. For starters, Newark is a dead little town, there is absolutely nothing in this town! And all you pretty much have are one CVS, one 7-11 and a few small stores on Main St. So if you are looking for a vibrant community surrounding campus you will not find it in Newark, DE—also parking is sooo expensive, and the train station is far, inconvenient and the SEPTA to philadelphia or wilmington runs like 3 times a day (and on weekdays only!!!!) Secondly, if you are looking for an intellectually stimulating experience with an informed student body who knows whats going on around the world, and who are passionate about what they want to do in life, this is not the school for you. Everyone comes from small suburbs or towns in Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland, Long Island and of course, Delaware. The students here have no curiousity about the world, no intellectual capacity, and absolutely no interest in anything but when they're gonna be able to drink another Milwaukie's BEAST. The guys are all immature dumb jock types who act like 13 yr olds and run around the dorms screaming and yelling and playing dumb pranks at 4 am. The girls are slutty airheads for the most part. UD is trully the antithesis of what a university should strive for when choosing their students—they seem to do everything in their power to not pick scholarly and intelligent people. Thirdly, the teachers are very unimpressive (this has been my experience so far) and very large, there seems to be a lot of red tape with the administration (which was highlighted with a problem I had with my computer) which can be tidious. Sometimes in my American Political System class I laughed when the incopetence of my proffessor showed, for ex. she confused the senator from Alaska and Arkansas, which in and of itself was not a big deal, but you really expect these people with Ph D's to not confise these things…I can name many more examples. So overall, I have not been impressed with the faculty or administration. Fourth, they are cheap, and want to take your money any way they possibly can. The food in Trabant (the student services place) is too expensive…chicken fingers, fries, and a small coke is about $7.50 for ex. It seems like you have to pay for every little thing…they charge your entire floor in the dorm if the trash cans are heavier than the custodians want it, they charge you to print, photocopy, over $400 a semester for parking, and on and on and on. Next thing you now they'll charge you to breathe in their campus. Fifth, the social life is terrible! They have increased campus security quite a lot and have been cracking down on drinking since I guess the school made news about being a big party school. The frats are so stupid (picture the typical dtudent I described multiplied by 10), the house parties are equally dumb and under constant threat of being raided by cops—one of my friends here got raped in the second week of school. And if you really don't feel like binging on cheap warm beer over the weekend, then you really have no other options. You are stuck in your dorm unless you have a car, because Newark certainly will not provide you much outside entertainment. I could go on and on about the shithole this place is, but I think you get the picture by now. I am transferring for the spring of 2006 which leaves me with 2 more semesters (I may do one abroad so I can get out of this campus) and then I am OUT for good. However, the campus is gorgeous and I will give credit where it's due, but I would rather be in a ghetto and be happy than be in ivory towers and be miserable. So choose wisely when applying to college and stay away from UD if you don't like the things I described, if however you do, then I encourage you to apply and take my spot when I leave because you will have the time of your life!
  • p.s. the school mascot is an embarrasment! Blue Hens sound about as mean and intimidating to me as a koala.

You're an excellent candidate for a Liberal Arts school, unfortunately, you don't have the SAT score. Not sure why you would go to UD for Poly Sci.
