Cal Poly started out fabulously fun and informative and went slowly downhill as I neared graduation. I transferred from a junior college and discovered some things people have already mentioned:
  • SLO is a fun town, plenty to do, especially if you are at all athletic
  • the liberal arts programs, with the notable exception of the theatre dept., leave much to be desired
  • room, board, everything is expensive - I have been an alumni for 6 years and I am still paying for it (loans)
  • the campus culture is in a bit of a 'reality bubble' - there is not much real-world preparation
  • you can party at this school at any time with any number of very attractive people, the quarter system is not as oppressive on your time as you would think, however there are a lot of conservative christians at this school and that prudery may have an impact on your dating life
  • To sum up, a great school if you are male and majoring in sciences or female and majoring in liberal arts, not so great if you don't fit into this more traditional sexual politics. While generally disappointed with my major I made the most of the situation by getting involved in the truly-fun and challenging theatre dept activities
