UC San Diego is a fantastic school in a fantastic location. In my freshmen year my dorm had a window overlooking the Pacific Ocean and I met more interesting people then I ever have before. Do not expect to instantly find yourself in the middle of an "animal house" movie when you arrive at this campus, but if you have initiative, and aren't afraid to talk to people, you will more then easily find plenty to distract you everyday. But, be warned I know many people who were not able to keep up with the academics here because of this.

UCSD's programs are top in the nation (especially the sciences, but this emphasis has a lot more to do with how federal grant money is distributed then how the administration works). One of the greatest things about UCSD is the quality of its research, which any willing student is able to do, and unlike at many other institutions, can get paid to do. My senior year I was paid to travel to Antarctica with my lab and a good friend of mine just recieved a UCSD grant to travel to Costa Rica in order to find new ways to manage tropical fisheries. Take advantage of these opportunities. The students are all friendly and while some do become a little too absorbed in their school work, with over 20,000 people on campus, weekly concerts and a great IM sports program, this will only bother you when you see the curve in your classes.

On the town side, La Jolla is an expensive and very spread out town. While this means UCSD has a very safe campus, it also means you should bring a car (only like many, make friends with someone who has one). Also, the classes are large and the passing periods short, so if you are the quiet type it may be difficult to get letters of recommendation for graduate school, especially if you don't take the initiative to find a mentor (available) or work on a small project with a prof. Oh and go snorkeling in the cove, its incredible.

And remember, wherever you end up, it is college and you will have a good time. The most important thing is who you are, not where you are.
