The university is poorly funded and everything about the place screams average. Not very many interesting people, very little intellectual diversity, everyone goes home on the weekends. Although faculty encourage students, students generally just want to pass the class and get that job.Cultural events are lame when they exist, and the surrounding city is devoid of any culture. Central doesn't have the feel of a "real college," i.e. there aren't lots of places to hang out on campus besides the library, the campus is dead after dark. Social activies consist largely of drinking and partying, so if you are an occasional or non- drinker you won't enjoy yourself very much.If this sounds like a rant—well, maybe it is. But it is an honest rant. Bottom line: CMU is one step above high-school, less working-class than a community college, and one step below a real, academically and socially diverse, university experience. If the latter is what you're looking for, look elsewhere; MSU, as someone else noted, is just an hour south of here and provides a leap in richness of experience (with similar that far exceeds the difference in tuition between the two schools (its your life, spend the extra money people).
