Overall, no private school system is anymore flawless as a public school. However, things get tricky when you deal with a private school because they can play by their own rules. But when you apply to Hofstra or any other private school, it’s your gamble. If I didn't go to Hofstra, I would most likely be attending one of my in-state public schools, which are still known to be "party schools", despite their high ranking as a public school. But get real, if all 5,000 some odd students want to waste their mommy and daddy's money, having a four-year long hangover…that doesn't mean you still can't do well. So as for "the students suck", "they are rich snobs"…yes college students do suck because they are still in high school mode. NO MATTER WHICH COLLEGE YOU ATTEND! So don't let that be your excuse to do poorly. In fact you earn your grade, and if you let some bozo in your class effect your studying, go back to elementary school and re-learn how to me an individual. Its all about faculty and administration. YOU (err your rich parents) are now paying for your education. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE RESOURCES. I just found out that I had $30.00credit worth of print and copying that I loose if I don't use it. So I chose to take advantage of it, as to make sure it paid off. If there is a problem, whether it be maintenance or academic SPEAK UP! No one wants to hear an 18 year old whine about how much the system is jacked up, so be intelligent and do your research. If you ask the right questions, you'll get the right answers—but be persistent. Make the university work for you. These people are hired to help you and they will if you let them (it doesn't hurt to remind them where their salary is coming from:). Sure you get your share of jackass professors whose ego's make up the other half of the school's population. but at the end of the day, you're paying them to teach you some good stuff that will make you rich one day. so…make sure they do just that. if you come to class unprepared and leave without gaining any more knowledge about the subject than you had the first day of the semester…its your fault. so make sure you are working hard, ask questions, use your professors' office hours as much as you can. get known and take the course seriously. make sure you are stern when requesting something, and be mature. I have witnessed my friends receive attitude from workers here because they are lazy and don't want to deal with problems. BUT the squeaky wheel gets the grease. make sure you're prepared and know what you want so you can get it. and keep asking until it gets done. any university wants to get as much money as it can for as little works as possible…hey its the same logic students use when trying to get good grades. for those of you who are checking these rankings, you probably care about your school's rep and have a genuine interest to do well and either hope to read nasty, dastardly reviews of the school you hate so much, or are in hopes that you chose the best possible university for your field and your future. well, in my opinion Hofstra isn't the best university for you or me. the only one that is the best, is the one you chose to work hard in. in other words, if a student attends Harvard and allows him/herself to do nothing and not gain any knowledge while another attends Hofstra and works as hard as she or he can…which is the better school for the student?…well obviously the Hofstra student will have attained more knowledge and qualifications because they chose to work hard. so although environment is monumental for academic success, it is also univocally subjective. The campus is beautiful, for it is a registered arboretum. the university is accredited for its school of communications, which is why I am even here. the facilities are somewhat state-of-the art from what I know and we have pretty good alumnae with hook ups, which is very ideal. I mean, I wouldn't go to Hofstra just for a general degree. I am here for a specific field…a field that Hofstra is known for. so if you are attending or plan on attending h.u. for its less known or weaker schools…hey save your money or invest in another school that is better suited for your future. if you are undecided…go to a school that isn't so expensive but is liberal arts. be real, if you want to rant about a college b/c you knew before hand that it is strong in certain areas, but weak in others and you CHOOSE to attend despite the fact that you are studying under the weak area…DING DING DING:YOU'RE THE LOSER! so don't waste your time and money. make sure you research and understand all the policies before applying!!! especially the ones about credit transfers. I didn't ask the right questions, so some of my high school credits didn't transfer..but it was my lack of research. and realize that if you base your college decision solely on this or any other ranking… you are attending college for the wrong reasons. try to visit the campus when you can. I wasn't able to attend freshman orientation and I missed out on a lot, especially since I am out of state. and take all advice and insights with a grain, the person could've just had a bad day. only you can be the best judge of whether Hofstra is the best school for you. oh yea, as our motto goes :"stand steadfast". and you have to do just that when it comes to your education—it's just too important for you not to.
