I would not recommend Columbia for those seeking an education in music. The joint program with Juilliard that is so highly touted in Columbia's brochure is non-existent. Not even the Dean of the school has been able to explain why Columbia advertises this program, but fails to deliver the goods. There is little applied music at Columbia, and no feeling of unity amongst those who choose music as a major. Though the city has much to offer artisticly, New York is filthy, overpriced, rude and crowded. A major disappointment compared to other large cities that offer similar opportunities. As with many in the music department, I will be transferring out A.S.A.P.

Several studies have negated that stereotype, it may have been true in the 70s and 80s but not now.

On the other, the only credit I can give is morningside heights has issues its still upper manhattan and harlem which has improved but I will agree in morningside that you will find rude and crowded people. And there are crime issues there also.

I transferred to U. of Rochester (Eastman School of Music), and indeed found a clean, safe environment in which to obtain my degree. I will most adamently defend my comments that New York City is indeed filthy, overpriced, rude, and crowded. This is not a stereotype, but a reality in which no "study" (of which you fail to name), can negate. I have lived in 5 other cities in the U.S., as well as Toronto, and NYC is the single most disgusting place I have ever called home. Rats abound in the overpriced subways, beggers are ubiquitous, housing prices are astounding (especially considering what you get), and the quality of life is non-existent. Coupled with the meanest, pushiest, most arrogant, and yes RUDEST, people to be found anywhere, I will not retract one word from my comments. Indeed, I am most fortunate to have gotten out of that dump, and I don't regret leaving for one second. I only feel sorry and pitty for those that remained.
