I had around 5-7 extra curriculars/volunteer opportunities to put onto my application. I had two letters of recommendations and a 28 on the ACT, which is just fine for Madison. I was wait-listed, and I suspect my sort-of low GPA of 3.7 and change was the cause. However, I sent in my third letter, pulled a 4.2 (weighted) for the next semester, and got in. When you're waitlisted, you can make it in Madison, they just want to see who really wants to be there, so don't give up!

I transferred into UW-Madison, so I can't really say I did anything. I heard it's easier to get in as a transfer than a freshman (don't know if this is true), but all I did was have a good GPA in both high school and college, and they accepted me. I had a 3.8 in both high school and college. If you are dead set on going here, and don't make it in as a freshman, I'd try going to community college for a year, making good grades, and then trying again.

Do well on the ACT, apply early, be involved in high school. Above all write a good entrance essay because that can make up for everything else.

Started out at Madison Area Technical College and was able to easily transfer to UW-Madison.

Be sure to know your math, problem solving skills, and have dedication if going into the school of engineering.
