Distinguish yourselfOct 30 2011Political Science
Distinguish yourself. Hopkins has a low acceptance rate and just being smart and hard working often isn't enough. They are doing everything they can to get rid of the 'nerdy' reputation so they're trying to attract people with interesting life experiences and ambitions.

If you have travel experience, that helps your application. If you are poor and can't travel, you can always say you did. I mean you're going to eventually, be it through school, or once you are on your feet financially. Stand up for yourself.

Getting into BME is pretty toughApr 27 2011Engineering Department
Getting into BME is pretty tough...

Starting with just getting in to the university (not BME), it isn't too bad. I think last time I checked it was something around 23%...I know that in my year they over enrolled so the class after me was cut to 17% admission. I think its back to normal now (20-24%).

BME on the other hand is extremely selective...I remember finding an article a few years back that said acceptance was 5.5%. That seems a little low to me. I think we get around 16 to 17 thousand applications each year (don't quote me on that). And each year the BME department brings in 100-120 freshmen. I don't know how many students apply to the BME program and don't get in, but you get the idea.

As far a what I did...its not really important. In H.S. I was spread out among a lot of interests (clubs, sports, etc.) but everyone is different. I had alright standardized scores and my GPA was fine in H.S. Just make sure you write a really good essay. I still think that is the single most important part of the college application.

Times have changed since 1976Feb 23 2011History/Histories (art history/etc.)
Times have changed since 1976. Hopkins was very competitive then and I suspect that has not changed. I was not a great student in high school, but got very good test scores. I didn't have much in the way of extra-curricular stuff or athletics. Frankly, I think that I got in because I declared that I wanted to be a history major. The school was desperate then to break the anti-intellectual grade-grind pre-med atmosphere that was producing suicides each year. I guess hope his effort was sucessuful
