Students who got into Columbia:

Tips mention: Interview (5), ACT/SAT (14), Grades (20), Sports/Extracurriculars (11), College Essay (12)
Get recruited for athleticsOct 15 2005English
Get recruited for athletics. Seriously, I've met some genuinely dumb people who got in because they can play a sport. Other than that, there's no guarantee.
ACT: 34 Female
I've always wanted to go to ColumbiaSep 23 2005Biology
I've always wanted to go to Columbia. I just worked hard in high school, maintaining a very high GPA, mostly A's. I took the most challenging courses available (AP) even if I didn't do wonderful in them (I made up for this by taking the courses over at my local Community College). I also tried to frame my application in a particular way; everything in my application served to portray me in a certain light.
SAT: 1560 Female
I was a world-class fencer on the track toAug 20 2005History/Histories (art history/etc.)
I was a world-class fencer on the track to the Olympics and I have known the Columbia Fencing Team coach since I was 13 yrs. old. But other kids I know had a really hard time getting in; about half of my friends got in off the wait-list after pestering their admission officer with letters and phone calls (both every week), visits, and insisting on more interviews.
SAT: 1550 Female
I was second in my class out of 300May 18 2005Philosophy
I was second in my class out of 300 at a very good public school, with a 1550 SAT, and I only missed 10 points on my SAT II's and had a buttload of AP 5's. I was the top runner on a state champ cross country team. Other than that, nothing special - no science contest victories or Teen Jeopardy or anything. I think Columbia is a place where if you get really good grades, get great test scores, and have some solid EC's, you can feel pretty confident about your chances (unlike Harvard or Princeton where it's a huge tossup unless you did something insane like wrote a bestselling novel in HS). Oh, and I applied RD. ED seems to be a pretty big advantage at CU.
SAT: 1550 Male
Try and look excellent on paper-Feb 21 2005Physics
try and look excellent on paper-
*be active in a variety of activities
*a brilliant essay won't hurt
*good test scores tend to help
*tell the admissions office what they want to hear, NOT that you want to come to Columbia for the sake of living in New York.
ACT: 33 SAT: 1510 Male
