Learn to express yourself eloquently and think of a good topic. A good topic doesn't have to be objectively interesting or impressive - you just have to find something that you're really passionate about. Think about what defines you as a person. Don't think about what you are a better candidate than everyone else b/c everyone is different and there is no possible way to say that gracefully. Think about what has been behind all of the accomplishments you've made. Think about what makes you the kind of person Brown can trust to continue to push yourself in the future both in and beyond Brown.

Clearly, good grades, scores, involvement, passion, etc. are important.
Selectivity is so great that your best bet is to do what you love, do it as well as you can, be proactive, and be honest in your application (ie: write an essay you like, even if it might not be "what they're looking for"). No one knows what they look for, so you may as well present yourself honestly and hope that that does the trick!

I think I got in as part of the Christian conservative diversity quota. I wrote my essay about being different, and I was accepted. I also had a 4.0 and good SAT's, but my extracurriculars were unimpressive.

Do very well in your classesDec 08 2008Neuroscience/Cognitive Science
Do very well in your classes... Very, Very Well. Show that you want to be a part of the Brown community and that you do stand for something (anything) passionately. Brown is looking for students to enrich its atmosphere. In complete truth, this University's most valuable assets are the students who call this place home and contribute to the intelligent air of the University.
